On March 14, female meteorologists all over the country will be wearing purple.
Since 1987, March has been declared Women’s History Month. The month-long celebration of women grew from International Women’s Day, first celebrated on March 8, 1911. The goal is to highlight the accomplishments of trailblazing women who lead the way for change.
Six years ago, female meteorologists across the country took it one step further with the Dress for STEM campaign. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
While females account for nearly half of the United States workforce, only 27% are in STEM careers.
Female meteorologists wear purple on March 14 to shine a light on this underrepresented career path. The goal is to spark a conversation about careers in meteorology and other STEM-related fields and pay tribute to the pioneers that carved a path for us.
Over a hundred female meteorologists participate by wearing a shade of purple and posting on social media.
March 14, or National Pi Day, was chosen since it’s already a day to celebrate a part of STEM. Pi is a symbol used in mathematics to represent the constant 3.14.
