The Week in Review
1. Ted Cruz slams Selena Gomez over actress’s tearful reaction to mass deportations
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz this week criticized Selena Gomez's emotional reaction to mass deportations in a viral video that has received mixed responses. Gomez filmed her reaction to President Trump’s recent crackdowns on immigration, including mass deportations and ICE raids that have taken place across the country over the last several days.
Cruz, a Republican senator who has long been supportive of Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric, responded to the news in a post on X.
“Why were no tears shed for Jocelyn Nungaray? Or Laken Riley? Or Rachel Morin? Why does Hollywood only cry for murderers & rapists & gang-bangers?” Cruz wrote.
2. Republican attorneys general, including Texas’ Paxton, call on Costco to drop DEI policies
As pressure to drop diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives ramps up on the private sector, 19 state attorneys general have sent a letter to Costco CEO and President Ron Vachris, calling on the warehouse retailer to fall in line.
The effort is being co-lead by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird.
3. Trump's tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China will take effect Saturday, White House confirms
President Donald Trump’s long-pledged tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico will take effect Saturday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed during Friday’s White House news briefing.
Trump will impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada while those from China will see an additional 10% tax, Leavitt reiterated, calling the move “promises made and promises kept by the president.”
4. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick releases list of his top 25 legislative priorities
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick released a list on Wednesday of some of his priorities for this year’s legislative session, including school vouchers, banning THC and placing the Ten Commandments in schools.
The 89th Legislature’s regular session began on Jan. 14 and runs until June 2, and as lieutenant governor, Patrick is tasked with leading and presiding over the Texas Senate.
Because of that, Patrick–a Republican–has broad power over setting the Legislature’s agenda and deciding what gets passed.
5. Texas Legislature once again turns its attention to school vouchers
A Texas Senate committee met this week to discuss the latest proposal to use taxpayer dollars to fund private school vouchers for Texas parents. This isn’t the first time Texas has tried to pass a voucher program. During the 2023 legislative session, lawmakers went through four special sessions to get a voucher bill passed, but a handful of House Republicans shot it down. Things may be different this time.
6. Shots fired at Border Patrol in Texas
U.S Border Patrol reported that shots were fired at some of its agents in Fronton, Texas, on Monday. There were no injuries reported.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lt. Chris Olivarez, the gunfire came from cartel members on the Mexico side of the border. The Border Patrol agents were patrolling when the shooting occurred.
Around the Nation
Everyone aboard an American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members that collided with an Army helicopter was feared dead in what was likely to be the worst U.S. aviation disaster in almost a quarter century, officials said Thursday.

The Super Bowl is set, and while the two teams prepare for the biggest matchup of the year, Americans are planning their Super Bowl parties. One of, if not the most important component of any Super Bowl party is, of course, the food. A new study done by Coffeeness has found the most popular Super Bowl foods by state, with Texans’ favorite Super Bowl snack being hot dogs.
