Deputies in Hernando County broke up a dog fighting operation, they say, and two men are facing charges.

  • James Harris, Darryl Smith arrested
  • Almost 20 animals found in distress, taken to vet for treatment

James Harris, 61, was charged with animal cruelty, the Sheriff's Office said Thursday. Darryl Smith, 63, was charged with felony animal cruelty and felony bait animals. He was placed under a $4,000 bond.

Authorities said they were called to a residence in Brooksville about an injured dog in a cage.

Whey they got there, more than a dozen pitbulls and six puppies were found. Investigators said the animals were in distress, starving and emaciated.

The animals were taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
