TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting involving a deputy Tuesday evening.

  • No deputies injured
  • 17-year-old man transported to hospital
  • Deputy responding to domestic disturbance

The shooting sent a teenager to the hospital.

According to authorities, two calls came in before 9 p.m. about a domestic disturbance at the Jasmine Terrace Apartments at 1250 Skipper Road.

Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said Deputy Daniel Estanislau, 26, encountered the 17-year-old male away from the apartment complex.

At some point, during their encounter, the deputy fired his weapon.

The teen is in critical but stable condition at an area hospital. No weapon was recovered from the scene, according to Chronister.

Chronister did say the teen and the domestic victims are all family members.

"(There was) different information between the two calls," Chronister said. "One of the calls said there was a family member bleeding.

"The other calls indicated the family member was bleeding and knocked out at one point."

During the investigation, deputies learned that a family dispute began while they were in a parking lot, resulting in the suspect striking his sister.  A short time later, the suspect threw his mother to the ground resulting in a minor head injury.

After Deputy Estanislau made contact with the teen suspect, he became in fear for his safety due to his belief that the suspect had a gun.

After ordering the suspect to the ground and yelling, "drop the gun, drop the gun," the deputy fired two rounds from his gun and struck the suspect once in the upper body.

Deputy Estanislau has been placed on administrative leave per policy.

The investigation remains ongoing.
