LOS ANGELES -- Perhaps Nipsey Hussle’s greatest legacy will be what he left with the community’s young people. Many teens who knew him may say they will never forget the rapper and what he gave them.
Komacy Jackson, 17, still can’t believe she won’t see him again. She’s known him since she was 8 years old.
“It was more devastating than anything,” Jackson said. “No one thought he would be the one to really leave us…he really gave back to all of us.”
He gave to her in a big way, allowing her to be in his Hussle and Motivate video. As a close family friend, Hussle was like an uncle to her. She was there when he leased the first store at the shopping center eventually owned on the corner of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard.
She said he taught her to invest. “Invest into stuff and that’s always going to be long term,” Jackson said.
Donce Lewis, 12, used to see Hussle at his Marathon clothing store. Hussle was good friends with his father and uncle. Donce said he will always remember the advice Hussle gave him for becoming a football player.
“Stay focused, stay educated because without school you can’t play ball,” Lewis said.
The rapper also stressed to Jackson the importance of education. But she said his last name will always be what she remembers first about him.
“One thing I will always remember is to 'Hussle' and to never put your head down literally, like keep moving forward,” Jackson said. “He was like our only hope. Like out of all these rappers, out of everybody, he was the only hope in this area that we could look up to.”
