TAMPA, Fla. — It’s been almost a week since a former Plant High school football player turned NFL player was gunned down in Tampa and his family says it gets harder everyday knowing the killer is still out there.

On Friday, Tampa Police said they’ve got some leads but not enough, and they’re hoping the family’s plea for answers will inspire someone who knows something in this case to come forward.

They’ve been spending time mourning and grieving and desperate to find out what happened the night Patterson was shot and killed. His family held a vigil on Monday and another one Friday. They prayed at both vigils for answers.

Saturday, it will be one week to the day since the fatal shooting of Patterson and Tampa police still have not determined a suspect.

“Please come forward. How would you feel if your bother got killed? How would you feel if your mother got killed? You would be feeling the same way I’m feeling right now. I’m lost without my brother. I’m heartbroken without my brother,” said Patterson’s sister, Javonica.

Patterson’s death impacted a lot of people as a plant high school graduate and his teammates and community gathered to remember him on Thursday.

Police say last Saturday morning, Patterson’s roommate woke up after hearing a commotion in the living room, found Patterson lying on his back and the killer standing near him before the suspect took off. Police believe he may have gotten into a white SUV.

Police do not believe the attack was random.

For now his family, and his former teammates, are hoping someone knows who killed Patterson and will come forward.

Eric Sr. said the heartbreak of loosing his son is sometimes too much to bear. He’s calling out the shooter, asking that he take responsibility for killing his son who shared his name.

“Just be a man. You was a man to kill my son so just be a man and turn yourself in. Let us get closure on my son,” Eric Senior said.

It’s closure Tampa Police say they’re hoping for too. but they still need help getting there.

“We’re investigating. We have some leads. We don’t have enough to make an arrest at this point so we, and the family (is) asking if anyone has any information. If they saw somebody fleeing from the area at about that time of day. If they saw a vehicle speeding off that time of day, we want to know about it,” said Tampa PD Spokesperson Steve Hegarty.

Tampa police said they’re checking surveillance cameras in the area near where the shooting happened. If you can help them fill in the blanks and make an arrest, police want to hear from you.

But in the meantime, the family says they’re trying to focus on how he lived his life and not just how he died.

Friday's vigil was at 7:30 p.m. on Nassau Street in Tampa.

The family has planned Patterson’s funeral for next Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at The Center for Manifestation Church located at 3102 East Lake Avenue. The wake will be held Friday at Ray Williams Funeral home located at 301 N Howard Avenue.

Both are open to the public.
