TAMPA, Fla. – The chatter on social media from South Tampa residents is concern about the safety of their streets.
- Bayshore Blvd. not among High Crash Spots
- Vision Zero tracking traffic incidents in Hillsborough
- Latest Vision Zero Report says fatalities to rise
Is Bayshore Boulevard one of the more dangerous roads in Tampa? The city and county officials have been looking at this very attentively.
In 2017, they partnered up to implement the Vision Zero Action Plan, as a way to drive down the number of dangerous and fatal accidents on roadways.
When the initial analysis of problem areas was first published Bayshore was not one of the spots.
Even in its most recent quarterly report from November, it's not one of the dangerous areas.
When you think about Bayshore, it's a unique road with high volume traffic at peak times and high volume of pedestrians and cyclists on the promenade.
City officials told Spectrum Bay News 9 to keep in mind accident prevention is very difficult when a driver is violating laws.
In the case of the recent pedestrian fatality, the driver is charged with DUI and driving more than twice the speed limit.
The most recent report said "while the number of fatalities in 2019 is below recent years, the number is expected to rise."
Among the high crash spots are Kennedy Boulevard from Dale Mabry into Downtown, Dale Mabry from Hillsborough to Bears, and Brandon Boulevard from Falkenburg Road to Parsons Avenue.
