LARGO, Fla. — Pinellas County students won't be starting school until Aug. 24.

What You Need To Know

The school board voted unanimously Tuesday to push the start of school back by two weeks due to the pandemic.

But a majority of the students will not actually be going back to campuses.

The district's reopening survey indicated more than 60 percent of students are electing to attend online or remote classes.

And that is fine with some teachers, who have expressed concern with being back in classrooms with students at this time.

Several teachers demonstrated outside the school board offices Tuesday against returning to in-class teaching next month.

“To me the delay serves no purpose if there’s no plan," said teacher Travis Leuth. "Let us know if you’re going to announce a delay tonight, let us know what the plan is before we go back.”

All school districts in the Bay area have delayed their school return dates by at least a week.

Superintendents in Pinellas and Hillsborough have both said their plans could change again.
