It had all the makings of a D-list action movie. An inmate at the Orient Road Jail in Hillsborough County allegedly tried to make a break for it – but she didn’t get far.
The sheriff’s office says 27-year-old Shelby Hartley made it into the ceiling above the second floor on Sunday with the help of another inmate, 28-year-old Ashley Bryant.
Then came the inevitable crash.
According to a news release, Hartley fell through the ceiling and landed on the floor. A jail nurse provided first aid before deputies took her to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
She allegedly told the nurse, “I’m sorry. I was trying to get out. I was trying to get away.”
Now, Hartley is charged with escape and Bryant is accused of aiding escape.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister called the plan “shortsighted.”
“The security at our jails makes it nearly impossible for inmates to escape from within the facilities,” he said. “The jail pods are contained and reinforced by concrete around each one.”
