ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — We all wish we could have super powers like comic book heroes.

But this week's Everyday Hero is using the power of joy to lift the spirits of sick children across Tampa Bay.

For Scott Whipple, the life of a super hero is just another day at the office.

What You Need To Know

  • HERO Scott Whipple started Costumers With A Cause charity to aid children

  •  Volunteers visit sick kids, as well as raise money for various charities

  • MORE INFO: Costumers With A Cause

He is president of Costumers With A Cause. Volunteers visit kids in hospitals and raising money and awareness for many causes.

On the group’s webpage, a quote from Winston Churchill reads “we make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.”

“We want to give back to the community and give back to children and families,” Whipple said. “We never make things about us.”

A non-profit depending upon support from the community, when fundraising for an organization every penny, 100% of the funds raised goes to that organization or cause.

The pandemic has slowed down appearances but larger venues like a drive in theater in Lakeland still work.

And with the May 7 opening of the new super hero film “Black Widow,” Scott is searching for a theater with a large enough lobby for his super heroes to appear - of course with masks and keeping that safe distance.

Along with many volunteers, super heroes Scott and his wife Spring often ‘suit up” as well.

For Whipple and his team, the payback comes in the eyes of children.

“A lot of it is just the wonderment from the kids,” Whipple said. “How often do kids really get to meet the real life super heroes?”
