ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have announced the death of bullpen catcher Jean Ramirez.

The team announced the 28-year-old died unexpectedly in Fort Worth, Texas. The Rays have not released any other details on his death.

A native of Puerto Rico, Ramirez attended high school in Fort Worth.

Ramirez played for three years in the Rays’ minor league system after being drafted in 2016.

He was released after the 2018 season but returned to the team as a bullpen catcher the next year.

In a statement, Rays manager Kevin Cash said “Jean was an incredible teammate and friend.

“He brought so much passion and energy each day to our clubhouse and bullpen, and his love for the Rays and baseball was evident to all who interacted with him. He had the biggest heart and most infectious smile. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Jean will be deeply missed.”

Rays' president of baseball operations Erik Neander also released a statement, in-part saying "We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Jean's family.

"He exuded so much joy in all he did, and his kind heart was truly a gift to all."
