A deputy first observed the teen in a rented black Toyota RAV4, traveling eastbound on Sheriff Mylander Way in Brooksville, without the headlights activated, the report said.

When the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, officials said the teen drove off and ran a red light at the intersection of Cortez Blvd. and West Jefferson St. The deputy then stopped attempts to pull the vehicle over.

Officials said less than an hour later at 11:30 p.m., the Toyota crashed through a fence and into the west side of the Sheriff’s Office main building, twice.

The total damage is estimated at $16,000.

After the teen got out of the vehicle, deputies said he made a comment about wanting to commit self-harm, according to the report.

Officials said the teen also shoved the deputy when he was being taken into custody.

Deputies were able to get a hold of the teen’s father, who said the two were at the New Beginnings Youth Shelter earlier, and that his son drove off in the vehicle while there. His father believed the teen was returning home.

Officials placed the teen in protective custody under a Baker Act. He will later face charges of fleeing and eluding, criminal mischief, battery on a law enforcement officer, and trespassing.
