HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A student has been arrested following a lockdown at Lennard High School in Ruskin, which was lifted on Thursday afternoon.
Deputies say that on Thursday, at approximately 10:30 a.m., they were alerted to an adult male who arrived at South Bay Hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. After investigating, detectives determined the man accidentally shot himself while in the parking lot of Lennard High School, according to officials.
After deputies contacted the school resource deputy, who notified the school administration, the school was placed on a lockdown.
HCSO detectives learned through preliminary investigation that the former student visited campus daily to meet with a friend. Officials said that on Thursday morning, the former student got into his friend's car and discovered a firearm, and subsequently shot himself accidentally.
Deputies said the school remained on lockdown, and students and staff were safe in their locked classrooms, while deputies searched the campus for the firearm. After the student was identified, he was removed from his classroom and detained. The firearm was found in his car, and the lockdown was lifted, officials said.
Deputies said the student is under arrest for Possession of a Weapon on a School Property.
There was no active threat to students, teachers or staff.
