ORLANDO, Fla. — Temperatures will quickly fall Friday afternoon and evening, with low temperatures on Saturday morning around the mid-30s. 


What You Need To Know


Saturday and Sunday mornings, we could see wind chills in the teens for some in our northern counties with the low and mid 20s for those along the I-4 corridor to points south.

Make sure you bring all your pets inside, cover up those plants and bundle up if you plan on heading out.

The weather will prompt cold weather shelters being opened.

Orange County

  • Salvation Army in Orlando will open its cold weather shelters for Friday through Tuesday.
    • Men’s Shelter located at 624 Lexington Ave (sign up is 6 p.m. Friday)
  • Families can find shelter at the Coalition for the Homeless and the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. The shelters will open at beyond normal capacity starting at 3 p.m. Friday, continuing into Monday.
    • Coalition for the Homeless shelter, located at 18 N. Terry Ave., in Orlando.
    • The Salvation Army Orlando, located at 416 W. Colonial Dr., in Orlando
    • The Orlando Union Rescue Mission, located at 3300 W. Colonial Dr., in Orlando.
    • Covenant House (for ages 18-21 only), located at 5931 E. Colonial Dr., in Orlando
    • Orange County is also opening two "warming centers," which are intended to be overflow facilities when the shelters get too full where people can go to get out of the cold. They also will open at 3 p.m. Friday.
      • Food may be limited to snack packs at these centers, and it is unclear whether cots will be available.
      • The warming centers are pet friendly, but the animals must be in carriers or crates.
      • Barnett Park warming center is at 4801 W. Colonial Dr. in Orlando.
      • The Goldenrod Park warming center is at 4863 N Goldenrod Road in Winter Park.
    • Lynx will operate free bus service to the shelters and warming centers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, although service on Christmas Day may be limited.

Brevard County

  • Helps Community Initiative will open a facility starting at 6 p.m. Friday. It will remain open as remains open as the temperature drops to 45 degrees or below.
    • It is utilizing the Melbourne All Suites in at 4505 West New Haven Avenue.
    • Preregistration begins at noon Friday, at the Daily Bread,  815 E. Fee Avenue in Melbourne.
  • The Sharing Center of Central Brevard opens its cold weather shelter when the temperature is forecast to drop below 45 degrees, as determined by weather.gov. Shelter doors open at 6 p.m. and close at 7 a.m. the next day.
    • The shelter is for men and women only, NO children or animals.
    • Enter through the Comunity Kitchen at 113 Aurora Street in Cocoa.
    • An evening meal and continental breakfast will be provided.

Osceola County

First United Method Church St. Cloud (1000 Ohio Avenue, St. Cloud) will open its doors at 6 p.m., Friday December 23rd to provide a nighttime refuge.

On Christmas Eve the Shelter will open at 8:30 p.m. This location will also open on Christmas night at 6:00 p.m.

Flagler County

The Sheltering Tree will open a cold-weather shelter Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights at the Church on the Rock not only for the homeless, but for anyone who is without heat.

Church on the Rock is located at 2200 N. State Street. The cold-weather shelter will open at 5:30 p.m. each evening and will close at 8 a.m. the following day.

Transportation is available for those who need it through Flagler County.

There are two routes that follow the schedules below – both will arrive at Church on the Rocks at 5 p.m.

• Dollar General at Publix Town Center, 3:30

• Near the McDonald’s at Old Kings Road South and State Road 100, 4 p.m.

• Dollar Tree by Carrabas and Walmart, 4:30 p.m.

• Palm Coast Main Branch Library, 4:45 p.m.

• Dollar General at County Road 305 and Canal Avenue in Daytona North.

• Bunnell Free Clinic, 4:30 p.m.

• First United Methodist Church in Bunnell, 4:30 p.m.

The Sheltering Tree, 386-437-3258, is under the umbrella of the Flagler County Family Assistance Center and is a non-denominational civic organization that was created in 2011 to provide cold-weather sheltering during cold nights in Flagler County.

Lake County

  • Trinity Assembly of God (200 Urick Street, Fruitland Park)

            o   Open 24 hours a day

  • LifePointe Church (3551 E. Orange Avenue, Eustis)

            o   Open from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

An additional Salvation Army warming shelter (2605 South Street, Leesburg) will be open for residents during the day. The warming shelter will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday through Monday.

LakeXpress, Lake County’s fixed route transportation service, will provide free transportation to riders who need assistance traveling to a cold weather shelter. The shelter route schedule will be published before Friday to ensure those who need the bus system can plan appropriately. The schedule will be available on the County’s social media pages and website.

Nonprofit and faith-based organizations that wish to offer sheltering assistance in the future should contact Lake County Emergency Management at 352-343-9420.

Marion County

The Salvation Army will have sheltering accommodations in place for the upcoming cold weather through the holiday weekend for those that need to seek refuge.

  • The Salvation Army – Center of Hope check-in time is at 6:30PM.

Seminole County

Seminole County officials say its "extreme weather shelter plan" has been executed, but has not proved a detailed list of shelter locations.

  • The Rescue Outreach Mission in Sanford will open beyond normal capacity as cold-weather shelter.
  • Location: 1701 W 13th Street in Sanford.

Sumter County
