RIVERVIEW, Fla. — For a very musical and energetic Bay area couple, spreading love and joy to seniors is their favorite tune.

What You Need To Know

Like a cool breeze, they'll sweep you off your feet onto the dance floor.

It was a holiday and hello 2023 party the day we visited The Crossings at Riverview senior living facility.

Martha and Jimmie Blount Jr. are a wife and husband team who make up “Latin Breeze”, a DJ and musician with shows dedicated to bringing the power of music to the elderly.

“If we can bring it in for the one hour, give them some time for joy and some hope and a little bit of life, then it’s all worth it,” Jimmie Blount Jr. said.

Jimmie, who also plays in the Venice Symphony, had a career in the U.S. Navy as a musician in the Navy band, and retired as a senior chief.

“I play trombone. I started off playing bass trombone when I was in college,” he said. "And when I joined the Navy I was playing tenor trombone. But I also play a bass guitar. In church I play base guitar.”

Martha, a native New Yorker who is also known as “the Latin from Manhattan,” told us about a son, whose mom was a senior home resident, who stopped by for a visit not knowing Latin Breeze was in the house.

“This man came in and thought he was in the wrong place because I had a conga line going,” she said. “He said ‘I’m not in the right place.’ The lady said ‘No, your mother’s on the line.’ He could not believe it.”

Jimmie says the enjoyment of the residents is matched by the comments and often astonishment expressed by family members.

Martha and Jimmie, who have been married for 33 years, do shows at retirement and nursing homes throughout the Bay area.

“It’s just nice to show that we care and we love them,” Jimmie said. “God’s love. God told us to love everybody.”
