CLEARWATER, Fla. — Staff at Clearwater Aquarium say a dolphin named Hemingway died early Monday morning after a brief illness.
"Our team is heartbroken this morning," aquarium officials said on social media.
Hemingway, who was estimated to be about 37 years old, was found stranded off Fiesta Key in July 2019. Hemingway lived at the Dolphin Complex with fellow dolphins Apollo and Nicholas.
Animal Care staff say they noticed a change in Hemingway’s behavior late last week and began treating him for a suspected gastrointestinal condition.
"During his time with us, CMA staff was able to share Hemingway’s story and the importance of protecting dolphins in the wild," aquarium officials said. "Our team learned new practices and continued to improve our approach in caring for dolphins with hearing loss."
