ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A deputy and a stranded driver were rescued after being sucked into a drainage pipe in Escambia County, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Watch the body camera footage:

Deputy William Hollingsworth had been rescuing stranded drivers from rising water on Friday, when he and one of those drivers both got sucked underwater and got pulled into a drainage pipe.

Officials said that the county had been experiencing severe weather and torrential downpours.

Hollingsworth had left his patrol car at one point to approach someone who was trapped in the rising waters, and as he approached, the deputy saw the driver go underwater and rushed to help, officials with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said.

Both the driver and Hollingsworth were sucked into the drainage pipe and were swept underneath the four-lane roadway of Highway 98, where they were submerged for around 30 seconds and traveled nearly 100 feet underwater, authorities said.

They eventually resurfaced at the other end of the roadway. The sheriff’s office said that they were lucky they survived it.
