TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Tampa Police targeted illegal street racing over the weekend.

The operation was dubbed "Operation Silent Knights."

The sting was prompted by an event circulating on social media known as "Tampa Bay Wet-N-Wild," which encouraged street takeovers and reckless driving.

Participants were urged to gather at illegally closed intersections to engage in racing and perform dangerous stunts, such as "donuts," in front of onlookers.

The operation resulted in multiple arrests, citations, and vehicle seizures in Tampa and Hillsborough County. The Tampa Police Department detained three suspects and confiscated two cars.

Video of several of the incidents was posted online by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Chad Chronister warned that street racers disrupt traffic and put the lives of spectators and law-abiding citizens at risk.

"To those who think they can break traffic laws and put the lives of others at risk, know that we are watching you. We see you online and on the road," said Sheriff Chronister.

Chief Lee Bercaw stressed the commitment of the Tampa Police Department to ensuring the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

"Careless and reckless driving with complete disregard for the safety of others is unacceptable," said Chief Bercaw. "It should be clear to anyone who thinks they can hold a street takeover anywhere in Tampa or Hillsborough County: we will catch, we will arrest you, and we will impound your car."

Charges for those involved in illegal street racing include various offenses related to racing, driving without registration, evading arrest, and drug offenses.

Anyone with information about the incidents or who wishes to report illegal street racing is urged to contact HCSO at 813-247-8200 or TPD at 813-231-6130.
