PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium were busy this week with back-to-back manatee rescues.

The gentle giants can get swept away by storm surge, which the area saw during Hurricane Idalia, causing them to go further inland than they should.

Both rescues happened Wednesday.

In one case, the agencies helped a manatee get back into the water in Clearwater. They assisted another one stuck in a drain in Port Richey.

The manatee in the drain suffered bloody injuries to his head and was taken to Zoo Tampa for evaluation.

The other manatee, an 11-foot long female, got stranded in low tide. It was healthy, and crews moved it to deeper water.
