TAMPA, Fla. — The family of one of the victims involved in the fatal train accident that happened over the weekend in Plant City gathered Tuesday in his memory.

What You Need To Know

  • Jakub Lopez was one of the victims involved in a fatal train accident in Plant City over the weekend

  • The Lopez family held a balloon release in his memory on Tuesday

  • Brother Julio Lopez shared fond memories of Jakub and how he plans to keep him alive in everything that he does

“Being in my small old car stopped in front of a train give me a warm small feeling like no other.”

Those are words from the last poem of Jakub Lopez, one of the victims. His brother, Julio Lopez, or JC like Jakub used to call him, says reading this gives him chills, knowing that his brother isn’t with him anymore.

“There’s no words that anybody can tell me right now that’ll make me feel better, I’m still processing everything, really,” he said.

Julio says seeing all the people come together during the balloon release doesn’t surprise him.

He says Jakub was friendly and made a new friend almost every day. “He was so awesome, he was such a pure soul, he was so full of love, if you met him I guarantee when he left you were smiling.”

Now, hugging each other a little tighter tonight, Julio says his brother is still here with them. Living through the art he used to create, his music, up the little buggy he used to drive.

“I’m just going to try and embrace every moment because I know he did,” says Julio.

Jakub’s family members say they’re sending prayers to the other two families who were also impacted in this accident.

They ask that people continue to pray as they navigate the tough situation.

Other events to help collect funds for the victims are being planned for this weekend.

The accident is still being investigated by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and no other information has been released as to why the car crossed onto the tracks.
