"There is no reasonable explanation for a 14-year-old to be in possession of a firearm," Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said Thursday. "I am incredibly proud of the hard work our officers and detectives continue to dedicate to this investigation, which has led to another significant arrest in the case. We appreciate all the tips provided by our community to aid this investigation and we will continue to work closely with the State Attorney's Office to ensure that all those involved are arrested and held accountable for their actions. Our job is not finished."
The suspect was taken to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office.
Police are still looking for other persons of interest in the shooting that killed two people and injured 16 more. The two killed were 14-year-old Elijah Wilson and 20-year-old Harrison Boonstoppel.
One person is already in custody in connection with the shooting. Tyrell Phillips, 22, is facing second-degree murder charges. He has been denied bond.
Tampa police say the shooting happened just before 3 a.m. Oct. 29, in the area of Tangra Nightclub in the 1600 block of E 7th Ave.
Bercaw said the incident started with a dispute between two groups. One person died at the scene, and a second died at a local hospital.
Sixteen additional victims were taken to nearby hospitals with related injuries, 15 of which were gunshot wounds. Initial reports stated there were 20 victims in total, but that number was revised down.
Many of the additional victims, who ranged in age from 18 to 27 years old, have since been medically treated and released from the hospital.
