TAMPA, Fla. — Gasparilla is here!
Hundreds of thousands of people, decked out in pirate gear, are expected to line Bayshore Boulevard today for the festivities.
Gasparilla is a beloved Tampa tradition that's well-attended every year. The huge turnout makes it one of the busiest days of the year for law enforcement.
The Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office have been preparing their crews all year for today's massive crowd. They will have patrols on bike, boat and even in the sky.
State and federal agencies will also be helping out to make sure everybody stays safe.
“Have a plan in place before the party gets started. How are you getting here, where are you going to park when you’re here — take advantage of one of the city parking garages and some of the rideshare programs and shuttles coming in," said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. "Most importantly, how are you getting home? Let’s be responsible. Don’t be that person that puts other lives at risk because you didn’t plan accordingly and now you’re driving impaired.”
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said this is not going to be the best day for a novice boat rider.
"Last year, we had plenty of BUI arrests and that’s the same thing as a DUI. So, be safe whether you’re on the land or on the water," he said.
Law enforcement agencies are expecting close to 350,000 people this afternoon.
The countdown is on for the pirate invasion and parade, as crews are getting Bayshore Boulevard ready for all the action to kick off.
