The decision follows frustration behind a ban, enacted by the County Commission last year, among local riding enthusiasts.

Commissioners passed an ordinance to lift the ban at Tuesday morning’s meeting.

Residents argued that the ban was an overreach of authority and have said it’s an attack on personal freedom. They also said that responsible riders were being punished for the actions of a few reckless individuals.

The ban, they say, had a negative impact on local businesses and economy — especially for those more rural area where these type of vehicles are used for transportation and recreation.

To show their opposition to the ban, a protest was planned to take place outside of the Hernando County Courthouse ahead of the meeting.

Those behind the protest said they want to work with commissioners to find solutions that promote safety and responsible ATV, UTV and golf cart usage.
