ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Mayor Ken Welch said Tuesday that some cranes in the city may pose a hazard during Hurricane Milton.

Specifically, the locations of concern are:

  • 400 Central Ave
  • 275 1st Ave
  • 1000 1st Ave N
  • 101 Main St N

Welch said the cranes are at risk of malfunctioning due to high winds.

"The city is working to notify residents in the surrounding areas and we are distributing informational materials to inform the residents of the potential hazard," Welch said. "Every resident in those areas should take the necessary precautions to prepare for this storm."

The mayor is recommending that residents near the cranes relocate, or get to the safest inner room of your home.

The city has been in touch with developers managing the cranes but said: "Due to nature of crane operations, lowering or securing a tower crane is scheduled weeks in advance and is not a feasible option within the timeframe of approaching storm due to rapid intensification and forecasted path."
