ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — This weekend, there are opportunities for Polk and Pinellas County residents to get a little extra help.
The Florida Department of Children and Families is hosting events for its Disaster Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.
It provides food assistance for people affected by either Hurricane Helene, Milton, or both.
For people struggling in the aftermath, like Glayds Pac, this is something they’ve been waiting for.
“In my case, it was terrible because I have two months without getting a job because I use my car to work and I lost my car,” she said.
Bridget Royster, the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Economic Self-Sufficiency, said they have hundreds of workers on sight to assist people through the process.
She said the people who pre-register can get through the process within ten minutes.
“We would like for you to pre-register before you come, but if you are unable to, there will be assistance there to provide that pre-registration assistance,” she said. “Then you go to the next phase and you’ll go do your interview. We’ll go over the information that you provided on your application and then the eligibility determination will be made.”
Gladys said the workers inside were a big help.
While she speaks English, it’s her second language.
With the help of those inside, she said the process was simple.
“If you don’t understand a form or something, they can help you. They have bilingual people, Spanish or English.”
This DSNAP event continues through Monday from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
The Polk County one goes through Sunday.
