SEFFNER, Fla. - Armwood football has built a reputation. Not just for winning, but for developing quarterbacks.

“There is a pedigree, there is a standard here,” said Armwood head coach Evan Davis.

The latest QB to step into the limelight in Seffner is Cam Ransom. The pressure to succeed at a place like Armwood can be daunting. But Cam is embracing the challenge.

“Armwood is a big school with a big name,” said the rising junior quarterback. “They’ve always had great quarterbacks that have come through Armwood and I just need to be the next guy to do that.”

Cam has already shown he can lead a team. In 2018 he helped the Hawks reach the 6A State Final. But that accomplishment, even as a sophomore starting QB, is expected at Armwood.

“Crazy stat – every quarterback who has started here since 2003 played in a state championship game except for one,” said Davis.

Evan Davis is an Armwood alum. He was the backup QB on the Hawks’ 2003 state championship team and knows that the coach-QB relationship is critical.

“He is so important to what we want to do here,” Davis said. “You look at him being a sophomore and developing last year and just coaching him through stuff. The game can seem so busy and fast.”

“It’s been a big relationship. We talk every day, we have a class together, and we just talk. We have a great communication,” said Ransom.

Cam is already receiving high level interest from college programs. He is ranked as the 10th-best dual-threat QB in the 2021 recruiting class. Cam holds offers from the likes of Boston College and Kentucky, as well as UCF and USF.

Cam is not focused on college. He knows it is still a long way off. For him and Evan Davis, it’s about continuing his development as a quarterback – particularly his mental game.

“He is so physically talented, the game is already slow for him,” said Davis. “He just needs to focus and worry about those small little details. Teach him how to problem solve. That’s the biggest thing. We’re always just talking to him and make sure he is always thinking.”

One thing that Cam has thought about over and over this offseason is losing to Miami-Northwestern in that 6A title game. But Cam has allowed that defeat to fuel him through every work out and every rep this spring.

“It was a pretty tough thing,” said Ransom. “We just come out here every day and we work hard in the weight room, in school, on the field. We have been there already so we know what is going to happen next year.”

All eyes are on Cam Ransom to lead Armwood back to another state championship game. But that seems like the easy part. If Cam can lift the Hawks to a state title, he will reach rare air as one of the few Armwood QBs to bring a state championship back to Seffner.
