HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Flooding in the Apollo Beach and Ruskin communities from Hurricane Helene has caused damage to wastewater pumping systems in south Hillsborough County, officials said Friday.

Residents who live west of Interstate 75 and south of the Alafia River are asked to minimize wastewater-producing activities such as bathing and showering, washing clothes and dishes, and flushing.

"Repairs will commence when floodwaters recede, most likely (Friday) afternoon into the evening," officials said in a news release. "The County will announce when repairs have been made and the pump station is again operational."

The announcement came several hours after St. Petersburg officials asked residents in the northeast part of the city to limit water usage after a plant had to be taken offline.

In addition, Bradenton officials are asking residents to conserve water over the next 24 to 48 hours as the area recovers from Helene.
