1. DeSantis urges lawmakers to take action to end property taxes during Orlando visit
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis discussed his goal to eliminate property taxes in the state during a speech in Orlando today.

2. University of Tampa welcomes in new president
The University of Tampa inaugurated its 11th president today. Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg was ceremonially welcomed as the school’s first new president in nearly 30 years.

3. Hernando County residents push for sidewalks in growing area
Hernando County residents says they would like to see sidewalks installed in the area of County Line Road and Anderson Snow Road.

4. National Weather Service cuts back weather balloon launches
The National Weather Service is cutting back its weather balloon launches. Spectrum Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist Mike Clay says, “these weather balloons may not seem important, but they are the basis for all the forecasts seen on apps, TV, everything from all weather sources. The more the better, we don’t need less data.”

5. St. Pete childcare expert credits great-grandmother's dedication and impact for her career
A St. Pete woman born in 1918 dedicated her life to making sure children in the Tampa Bay area had access to quality childcare. Her legacy lives on.

6. Women's Final Four heads to Tampa for 4th time
The college basketball women’s championship will be in Tampa this week for the record-setting fourth time.

  • TRAFFIC NOTES | Nebraska Avenue is still closed in Tampa just south of Busch Boulevard. This is for repair work on the railroad track there. Drivers can use Waters Avenue and Florida Avenue to get around the closure. FDOT says it is expected to reopen later this week. Meanwhile, the I-75 northbound ramp to State Road 60 is closing from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. tonight and tomorrow night for paving repairs. Drivers can use exit 254 to U.S. 301 as a detour.
  • GAS PRICES UPDATE |  Florida gas prices sees-awed again last week. After falling to a 15-month low of $2.96 per gallon last Monday, the state average bounced back up 19 cents per gallon to $3.15/g by Thursday. Sunday's state average price for gasoline was $3.11 per gallon. That's 14 cents more than a week ago, the same as a month ago, and 49 cents per gallon less than this time last year.   • RAYS THIS WEEK | The Tampa Bay Rays, who opened the regular season with two wins in three games against the Colorado Rockies at Steinbrenner Field, open a three-game home series tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Drew Rasmussmen gets the start for Tampa Bay, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. The Rays take on the Pirates tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. and at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

  • Florida 1st Congressional District special election: Republican Jimmy Patronis vs. Democrat Gay Valimont * Election called to complete the term of former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, who resigned last November following the announcement of his nomination for attorney general by President-elect Donald Trump. He later withdrew himself from consideration. Gaetz was also the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.
  • Florida 6th Congressional District special election: Republican Randy Fine vs. Democrat Josh Weil * Election called to complete the term of Republican Rep. Michael Waltz upon his appointment as national security advisor by President-elect Donald Trump
  • Wisconsin Supreme Court justice election: Susan Crawford vs. Brad Schimel. Incumbent Justice Ann Walsh Bradley is not seeking reelection. Wisconsin Supreme Court consists of seven justices who are elected in nonpartisan elections for 10-year terms and is currently considered to have a four-to-three liberal majority. The election to replace liberal-leaning Justice Bradley could shift the ideological balance of the court
